Technical terms glossary and jargon



AJAX Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, a technique used to implement rich interaction on webpages
ASP A server-side webpage scripting interface by Microsoft for dynamically-generated web pages. (also see PHP)
Blog A 'weBsite log' allows an individual to post regular entries of commentary, or other media such as images or video.
Broadband Higher speed Internet access than 'Dial-up'. ADSL is often reffered to as broadband.
Browser A program used to access webpages on the Internet, e.g Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari etc…
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) A formatting language used to describe the presentation semantics of a webpage
Crawler A computer program used by search engines that automatically gathers and categorizes information found on the Internet
Content Management System (CMS) Website tools that allow users with little technical knowledge to administrate and update website content.
Database An organized collection of data, very useful for presenting dynamic websites, managing content and enabling other functionality
Dial-up A form of Internet access that uses phone lines, limited to 56 kilobits per second, but often lower due to line quality.
Domain Name The name of a website, and part of the 'URL' used to access websites from a browser
Ecommerce The ability to Buy and sell of products or services over the Internet
Firewall A security barrier designed to prevent unauthorized or unwanted communications between computer networks
Flash Adobe Flash provides animation of text, sound, and images. It can capture user input via mouse, keyboard, etc.. Flash is frequently used for advertisements and games.
FTP Is a network protocol used to copy a file from one host to another over the Internet, often used for building websites.
Host A host is a computer connected to the Internet that can provide information resources as well as online application software and network services
HTML HyperText Markup Language provides a means to create structured web page documents.
ISP An Internet service provider is a company that offers its customers access to the Internet.
Internet Protocol A protocol used for communicating data across a packet switched network like the Internet
Javascript JavaScript is implemented as part of a web pages in order to provide enhanced user interfaces and dynamic websites.
Jquery Jquery is a library of JavaScript functions designed to simplify animations, handling events, and developing Ajax applications.
Keywords Keywords are words within webpages that are used by Search Engines to find relevant topics and webpages.
Link Short for Hyperlink, a reference to another document or webpage that a reader can follow, usually by clicking.
Metadata Elements placed within a webpage to describe it, such as keywords, geographical location, format etc
Open Source Open Source software is published and made available to the public, enabling anyone to copy, modify and redistribute the source code without paying royalties or fees. Open source code evolves through community cooperation.
Pagerank An analysis algorithm used by Google that assigns a numerical weighting to websites with the purpose of "measuring" their relative importance within Search Engine Result Pages.
PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) Open Source scripting language that can be used to produce dynamic web pages.
Plug-ins A plug-in is a set of components that adds capabilities and functionality to a software application or website.
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) Internet feed formats used to publish frequently updated works
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) The process of improving the ranking of a website in search engine results
Search Engines A search engine (e.g. Google) allows people to search for information on the Internet
Search Engine Results Page(SERP) A list of results when using a search engine
Server A server is a computer, or collection of computers, that provides services across a network to other users.
Sitemap A list of pages of a web site that helps visitors and search engines find pages on the site.
Structured Query Language (SQL) A database language designed for managing data
Traffic The amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) The "address" of a web page or other resource on the Internet
Voice Over IP (VOIP) Transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over the Internet, e.g. Skype
Virtual Private Network (VPN) A method of to providing remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network over the Internet.
Web standards Standardized best practices for building web sites, and a philosophy of web design and development that includes those methods
